Let’s start with Beck’s list of things he’s obsessed with:

  • Mommy
  • Spaceships
  • Pretzels
  • Pickles
  • Bubble water (aka club soda)
  • Legos
  • And his new backpack.

Probably in that order.

When we lost his old backpack on a recent trip to Disney, he was crushed. But it was too small for what he needed to carry anyway, so this meant it was time for something new. And bigger. And it turns out better – at least according to him – turns out it’s Out of This World!

Now the backpack has a purpose – we take his sheet and blanket to school in it every Monday and brings them home every Friday. We would leave the backpack at school in his cubbie the other days of the week so it was there on Friday for us to haul our stuff home.

One Monday he came home from school, wearing the empty backpack. I asked Mommy why he brought it home. Seems he insisted and wouldn’t leave without it. That happened every single day that week. And the next week – and the next week – and the next week.

You can ask him to leave it at school. But that’s when the corners of the mouth go down and you can bet the tears will follow. I’m not sure if it’s the cool factor of wearing a backpack or if he’s just crazy about it. And that’s when Gigi caves.

So our favorite backpack goes with us everywhere. And Gigi is OK with that because you know what? Kids love what they love for a reason, and it’s important to not ignore your child’s attachment to things they love. Especially when it’s out of this world.
