Best Tuna Cakes made with Hellmann’s Mayonnaise

I grew up in Maryland and anywhere I go now the crab cakes  and seafood in general do not measure up.   Now we don’t keep crab around the house, but knowing the Maryland way, we can make some pretty awesome tuna cakes!  The kids love them and making a good tuna cake at home is easy and fun.  Well it’s fun for me because the kids can make the whole dish themselves!  The key is to get your (previously washed) hands in there and *gently* mix the dish, keeping the some of the tuna lumps in tact.  The kids do their best!  Sometimes it’s just too much fun to mush and mash and form into patties.

I add a secret ingredient which gives it a little extra tang. I love to add mustard to tuna – it’s my secret ingredient. Love love love. In fact, mayo/mustard sauce is good with just about anything. (try it with chicken nuggets!)

Hands On Tuna Cakes

  • 2 cans of tuna, I prefer the white
  • 1/4 cup of Hellmann’s Mayonnaise
  • 1/3 cup chopped celery (optional)
  • 1/3 cup chopped onion (optional)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup plain or seasoned breadcrumbs
  • 2 teaspoons (or more to taste) prepared mustard
  • salt and pepper to taste

Add all ingredients to a bowl and lightly mix the ingredients with your hands. The key is to NOT break up too many lumps of tuna. This is the fun part for the kids and allows YOU to keep your nails clean which is an added plus…  …although my daughter might disagree, and grab her brother to mix so she can keep her nails clean too! Have them form patties and cook over medium to medium high heat. Serve on a bun with tomato and lettuce or as an entree with a side dish.  We like to dip in the Hellmann’s Dijonaise!  Enjoy!
