I had the opportunity to chat on the phone … yes the phone … the REAL phone… with Nate Berkus, the designer turned “tv personality designer”  on a blogger call last week.   He’s doing a series this week of surprise makeovers – “Nate Crate Drops” and changing the lives of families around the country.  If you get a chance to catch the show this week or his Holiday Special on the 24th, I think you’ll be impressed!

What a gorgeous package!

Yes I mean Nate… the boxes look good too!

He not only talked to us about the spirit of giving and how he hoped his Nate’s Crate Drops would inspire others to give spontaneously this season and year round, but he shared some decorating tips.  He seems to be a fan of dollar store treasures and Ikea easy and simple decor which is right up this Domestic Hacks alley.

Some tips I took away…

  • Dollar store frames can be turned into classic name place holders for the table.
  • Use simple white frames from Ikea to frame beautiful notebook covers (recycle yeah!) and write a note on the back to the recipient.
  • Simple decorations in a few key places can be as nice if not nicer than over decorating the house.  Try a grouping of simple vases of different heights on a front table with greenery in them.
  • Juice glasses (from the dollar store) make great votives.

It’s great to know that style and decor don’t have to break the bank!  Keep it simple and search out the bargains and enjoy decorating for the holidays!
